The 20th Annual Spring
The Friends Spring Book Sale is our largest fund-raising event and a great time too! Dates for the 2019 Book Sale are March 20-24. Book sale hours are:
Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, 12:00 noon to 4 p.m. Sunday is the bag sale, with a bag of books for $5.00.
Friends members, volunteers and GCL staff may attend the social and preview night on March 20th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Those who join the Friends group on Wednesday evening for a membership fee of $10 or more will be able to purchase up to 20 books that evening.
We generally have over 10,000 gently used books in dozens of categories for sale at our Book Sale. We also sell audio-visual materials as well as unique donations from the community such as comic books, stamps, and records.
We welcome donations of books and materials from the community. Simply bring your gently-used books and audio-visual materials to the circulation desk at the library. First, the Library Staff will go through your donation and see if there is anything they can use for the library’s collection. After that, Friends volunteers will go through your donation and see what we can use for our Holiday Book & Basket Sale in November/December. The rest of your donation will be sorted, boxed, and stored for the Book Sale in March/April.
After the Book Sale is over, the leftovers are given away to local charities or community groups. Your donation is greatly appreciated and helps many more groups than just the Germantown Community Library and the Friends of the Library.
About two weeks before the Book Sale, Friends volunteers; with the help of local groups such as the Boy Scouts, Germantown National Honor Society, Germantown Youth Futures, the Graduation Center, St. Boniface kid volunteers, and others, transport carloads of boxes of books from storage at the Germantown Public Works Department to the Library’s Community Room.
Friends members and volunteers are invited to the Friends Social and Book Sale Preview event, where a limited amount of items can be purchased the night before the Book Sale begins on Thursday.
On Thursday, our Book Sale begins. We have thousands of gently used adult and children’s books and audio-visual materials. Friends members and community volunteers have spent the past week or so, unpacking the books, making sure they belong in the proper category, and set them on the tables title up so you can read the titles. Hardcover books, large, and trade paperbacks are $1 each. Pocket paperbacks are $.50 each and 5 for $2. We have hundreds of used music CDs, and other audio-visual materials for sale as well. Old, Special, and Autographed books are available at special prices.
In the past, profits from the Book Sale have been used to purchase computers and printers for the library, sponsor 3-4 programs for the Children’s Summer Reading Program, the Purchase Art Award Contest in the fall, and the Annual Meeting. Additional funds have been used to purchase items and support other programs not covered by normal budgets.
Leftover books are given to various charitable organizations, and local groups.
Our “thanks” goes out to the many library supporters and patrons who have donated books regularly for the sale every year, and then returned to “shop our sale” to restock their home libraries.
The 2008 Spring Book Sale earned $6,388. The 2009 Spring Book Sale earned more than $7,300. The 2010 Spring Book Sale earned almost $7,000. The 2011 Spring Book Sale earned more than $6,300. The 2012 Spring Book Sale earned more than $7,000. The 2013 Spring Book Sale earned almost $5,300. The 2014 Spring Book Sale earned more than $5,200. The 2015 Spring Book Sale earned more than $5,000 The 2016 Spring Book Sale earned just over $6,250. The 2017 Spring Book Sale earned just over $7,100. The 2018 Spring Book Sale earned about $8,400.
